Need Help Moving? You Need Bellhops

Need movers in St. Louis? Contact BellhopsEveryone hates moving. You realize you have way more stuff than you thought. You have to ask your friends or family to help move or if you’re in a different city you go to Google and pray that you’re picking a reliable company.

Now, we have a new option for you. Enter Bellhops. What is Bellhops? Think Uber for moving. On one side you have you, the person that needs help moving. You can handle the renting a truck and packing your stuff, but it’s the actual getting the stuff in the truck that poses a problem. On the other hand, you have college students and others that 1) have the ability to help you get the stuff in the truck, 2) have the desire and most importantly, 3) have the time to help you.

Bellhops isn’t a full-service moving company. You don’t call them and have them show up with 3 guys packed in the cab of a moving truck that may or may not make it from Point A to Point B. Bellhops is more of the go-between to help make your move a pleasant experience. There are three service options for you to choose from. Bellhops can provide you with the manpower to load/unload your truck or both. Are you just moving down the road? Bellhops workers can load your truck, follow you to your destination and help unload your truck. Moving across the country? You can book Bellhops to help you load the truck in one city and book them again in your destination city.

How much does it cost? It’s really up to you depending on how much help you want and for how long. Standard rates are $40 per Bellhop per hour. Many moving companies have a minimum of 2-3 hours that you have to pay for. Since Bellhops specializes in smaller moves, their minimum is only one hour. Keep in mind Bellhops doesn’t provide the equipment or tools for the move, just the labor.

Bellhops got its start way back in 2011 and is now in more than 130 cities across the country while having its headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee. As of late last year, the company had 8,000 student movers. Two of those movers, Sorab and Jake from Rutgers, were featured in Business Insider last year after being hired by writer Rebecca Borison to help her move. In August of 2014, founders Cameron Doody and Stephen Vlahos told Pando that the company was on pace for 15,000 moves for the year. Bellhops raised $6 million in Series A funding last November from Binary Capital.

In Bellhops’s business model, movers receive a portion of the $40 charged for their services per hour and also get to keep their tips. All movers go through an interview and screening process before being allowed to be part of the Bellhops network. When a customer books a move, movers in the area receive a notification on their customized mobile app. Movers available can then claim the job. Customers receive confirmation that their move has been booked along with a picture and profile of each of their movers that will be helping them. Many of the movers in the Bellhops network are local college students involved in ROTC, Greek organizations or athletics.
